Representing Planet Hair at New York Fashion Week

1.18.17

During the week of February 9, around 125,000 people will attend fashion shows during the New York Fashion Week Fall 2017 and over 2 million will watch the shows online to see the trends the international designers have prepared for fall. It’s an exciting event in the fashion business and a crazy, fun time to be in New York City.

This year we’ll know at least a few people who will be there in person! Mel, Jessie and Emma will be joining the Aveda Fashion Week team, working behind the scenes to create the hair and makeup looks walking down the runway! These three were given opportunity of a lifetime by writing an essay, telling us why they wanted to attend Fashion Week.

Emma told us, “I’ve always wanted to be a part of Fashion Week, since I watched runway shows a little kid, but I never thought I’d have the opportunity to take part in it. This is a dream come true!”

In preparation for their big adventure, Emma, Mel and Jessie recently attended training in New York for runway styling. Mel and Jessie studied with Jon Reyman, the lead stylist of the Aveda Fashion Week team. With 20 years of experience creating runway hair styles for Fashion Week, Jon showed them hair do’s they’ll need to know for the shows. Emma studied with Janell Geason, lead makeup artist of the Aveda Fashion Week team, to practice this season’s makeup techniques and how to use products differently for the runway.

They will return to New York in February for three days of hard work. Joining 75 other international Aveda artists, they’ll work in small teams at the actual Fashion Week runway shows. Creating looks for around three shows each day, the artists will be shown a quick demo of the looks that Jon and Janell have decided on with each show’s designer, and will be expected to quickly replicate that exact look on many models.

We can’t wait to hear their stories when they get back. Stay tuned for more about their fabulous fashion adventure!
